Tanatos

Worm Tanatos spreads across the Internet. It comes in infected e-mail messages. Such messages can be without any attachments: the worm can install itself to the computer immediately when a user opens the message for reading. Tanatos sends itself to e-mail addresses found in a computer and places infected executables on remote shared disks. It has an integrated backdoor, which can be used by attackers to get the full control over your PC. It also terminates all antivirus and security-related applications processes. Some versions of this worm can infect many software and computer files.

Manual Removal

Step 1 : Use Windows File Search Tool to Find Tanatos Path

Go to Start > Search > All Files or Folders.
In the "All or part of the the file name" section, type in "Tanatos" file name(s).
To get better results, select "Look in: Local Hard Drives" or "Look in: My Computer" and then click "Search" button.
When Windows finishes your search, hover over the "In Folder" of "Tanatos", highlight the file and copy/paste the path into the address bar. Save the file's path on your clipboard because you'll need the file path to delete Tanatos in the following manual removal steps.

Step 2 : Use Windows Task Manager to Remove Tanatos Processes

To open the Windows Task Manager, use the combination of CTRL+ALT+DEL or CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
Click on the "Image Name" button to search for "Tanatos" process by name.
Select the "Tanatos" process and click on the "End Process" button to kill it.
Remove the "Tanatos" processes files

Step 3 : Detect and Delete Other Tanatos Files

To open the Windows Command Prompt, go to Start > Run > type cmd and then press the "OK" button.
Type in "dir /A name_of_the_folder" (for example, C:\Spyware-folder), which will display the folder's content even the hidden files.
To change directory, type in "cd name_of_the_folder".
Once you have the file you're looking for type in "del name_of_the_file".
To delete a file in folder, type in "del name_of_the_file".
To delete the entire folder, type in "rmdir /S name_of_the_folder".
Select the "Tanatos" process and click on the "End Process" button to kill it.
Remove the "Tanatos" processes files

Caution: Implement this method only if you are good at handling the computer. Not recomended for beginners like me. Deletion of the wrong files may lead to a system crash. So dont scold me if that happens. Gud luck!!! :p

Most viruses disable the working of the task manager so that the process information of that virus would not be recognized by the user. However, once the virus is deleted, the disabled task manager remains in the same condition. Here are the tips to enable and use it again.

1. Go to Start --> Run and type gpedit.msc and press return
2. A window will open displaying several settings and the configuration of the Computer and the Current User.
3. In the Group Policy settings tab, navigate to Administrative templates --> System and select Ctrl + Alt + Del options.
4. Double-click the Remove Task Manager option and disable it.
5. Now Restart your system and you can now find your Task Manager when you press Ctrl + Alt + Del or Ctrl + Shift + Esc

OR

Copy and paste this code in Start --> Run
REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

I hope it works. Let me know if it dint.
Good luck! :good:
